With a year left until its completion, the Pentagon Memorial Park’s construction is well underway. Currently, the foundation for the Perimeter Bench that surrounds Memorial Park is being formed and poured as the contractor works from the NW corner of the site to the SE corner. Nearly all of the foundations for the individual benches have been poured and the refining process will continue for several weeks.
The next step will be to begin installing the supply pipe that will be connected to each of the Memorial Unit basins. Laying this grid of supply lines began in mid-July and will continue through the end of September. This work is painstaking but will be key to providing the pools of water that will be a part of each Memorial Unit.
In mid-August we began seeing the beginning of the basin installation. These concrete basins are being fabricated in Woodbridge, VA and began arriving onsite at the end of July. Because the weight of each basin is 8,600 pounds (comparable to the weight of two to three Toyota Camrys), only eight to ten basins can be delivered to the site at one time.
The project is on schedule for completion in September of 2008 thanks to the hard work of everyone involved in the project. This is a true success story and a very exciting time for the Pentagon Memorial Fund.
